The final deadline for the shutting down of landfills that do not meet EU guidelines was 2009. July 15. 150 landfills closed down more than half, so now there are 75 landfills left in the country. The city councils have been aware of the deadline since 2001. According to the plans the role will be overtaken by regional waste handling centers, yet their construction has not begun in many places.
The Waste Prevention Alliance (HuMuSz) began its large-scope program on 9th of May 2009. The program's goal is to reduce municipal waste production. In the Zero Waste Program HuMuSz addresses residents, the government, residential city councils, the economic sphere, the educational and academic institutions, and further initiates the co-operation of non-profit organizations. With this broad-range initiation it would like to shed light on the fact that there is a need for societal solidarity. The basis for waste prevention is a new thinking process by which we gradually transform and make environmentally conscious current consumer and production models.
60-65 thousands visitors at a summer music festival. If everyone only drinks one beer/cola in a plastic cup (of course nobody there drinks just one), then 60-65 thousand packaging, approxmately 8-9 m3, and 6-700 kg waste is produced. But not during The Szeged Youth Days! At the he cup program, named the re-cup, which stated last spring and expanded in full, washable and re-fillable cups were used. The result is convincing: after the main concert there wasnt a single cup on the ground!

One of our campaigns "Squash it flat!" protested against throw-away aluminium cans. Another, the "Transparent action" aimed at saving returnable bottles. Some other actions like "Against PVC", "School canteen", and "Prepare presents and packaging on your own!" encourage by their message environmentally friendly activity.

The first program goes on from the autumn of 2005 until August, 2007, the second one started at the end of 2006 and is going to continue until December, 2009. In the first one 197 families took part, while in the second one 175 families and 14 schools and nurseries were involved.
